A Simple Change

Let's face it. Working at home requires serious
creativity and planning. In fact, if you are like me, you
spend so much time planning how to organize your business
and personal life and balance the two that you completely
begin to overlook obvious distractions that are keeping you
from being productive.
For example, earlier tonight I sat at my
desk the same as I do every night. I couldn't get comfortable
for the same reasons I can't get comfortable every night.
I was cold and my neck hurt from sitting in my chair incorrectly
to see my monitor clearly.
Finally, it occurred to me to adjust my monitor.
As I began to adjust it, I remembered it was in that location
for a reason. Given the way my desk was arranged, that's the
only position my monitor could safely sit in. I scratched
my head and sat back down. I realized in order to adjust my
monitor that I would have to move my desk. This meant rearranging
the whole office. Normally, I would have sat back down and
continued in agony instead of attempting to rearrange the
furniture by myself. Then I realized by moving the entire
desk, I'd also be away from the window, which would solve
the problem of being cold. If I weren't so cold and my monitor
was adjusted to a pleasing location, I could sit in my chair
correctly. As a matter of fact, this isn't even how I wanted
my office set up to start with, so why was it? The answer
is because this is how it was setup for me when I moved in
and had help moving the furniture. The furniture was arranged
to be eye pleasing by someone that doesn't even sit at my
desk! Instead of voicing my desires, I was polite and accepted
something I didn't like that left me feeling uncomfortable
for months! Why do we accept things the way they are when
they are easily remedied?
As I sit typing this article, I'm happy to
report I'm finally comfortable. My office is arranged creatively,
to meet MY needs. It will even work out to the children's
benefit as I was able to utilize space more effectively and
there is now an area for them to play! A few hours spent doing
something so obvious will save me time and frustration that
could be better spent enjoying my children. Isn't that reason
we are WAHMs to begin with?
I challenge you to make the simple changes
this week that have been hindering you. Take the time to do
things that are beneficial to your well-being. After all,
if you don't take care of yourself, who will?
