How Many Hats Are You Willing
To Wear?

As a work at home mom, you will wear several
hats. Your first title is Mommy. The role of Mommy, of course,
is by far the most time demanding, stressful and lowest
paying position you’ll ever fill. Just remember, the
payment is angel kisses and sticky hugs – where else
can you get that form of compensation? You’ll also
be the secretary, receptionist, customer service, management,
and sales department. Depending on your line of work, you’ll
most likely add a few other titles to that list. That’s
quite a bit to juggle. You will need a system, or at the
very least, some time to think about how you plan to handle
each of these positions. The best advice I can give for
this is to think back on your past job experiences. Most
of us have been in the outside work force at some point,
and I’m willing to bet you held a position that you
can learn from. Even if you only washed dishes at a restaurant,
you can learn from it!
I look back at every job I’ve had
in the past and I realize the jobs I hated most were also
the jobs I learned the most from! I also remember being
young and silly and thinking each position was below my
standards. I look back now and see that each was a learning
experience and a stepping-stone to where I am now. For instance,
as a receptionist, I learned skills vital for greeting the
public and making positive first impressions. In the food
industry, I learned patience and the old phrase, “the
customer is always right”. As a delinquent accounts
manager, I learned the art of creative problem solving.
You get the idea. Make your past experience work for you!
Determining the roles you will need to
play to make your business successful is the easy part.
Now you must also be the manager and ensure every “everyone
is doing their job”. To manage your business, you
will need to ensure that you are fulfilling all the requirements
in each “role” to have a successful business.
You will have to set goals and work to achieve them. You
will need to find methods to motivate yourself and be strict
with yourself when you don’t feel the desire to work
on your usual days of business.
Remember, when you respect and treat yourself
as a business, others will respect you and treat you as
a business as well!
